Middle Eastern Dance
The term belly dance, (in Arabic raqs sharqi, رقص شرقي, dance of the east, understood as the eastern part of the Arab world) indicates the classical dance that developed in the princely courts of the Middle East; the same term, in a broader sense, indicates all the versions that this dance has had up to the present day, also including all the various contaminations that have occurred through contact with different geographical areas and peoples. There are numerous styles, which differ based on geographical origin and the music that characterizes them. This dance has very ancient origins, dating back to the establishment of the first civilizations. The rotating and sinuous movements of this dance recall ancient fertility cults, such as that of the "Mother Goddess". Men were aware that everything that moved life was linked to reproduction, birth, the cycle of the seasons, and nature. For this reason, many of the styles of this dance are closely linked to femininity and were practiced exclusively by women. With evolution, dance begins to be a recurring element in man's life, and, in addition to accompanying rituals of prayer, begins to accompany moments of aggregation, communication, leisure and representation of everyday life; In this scenario, men also enter and become part of this very ancient dance, rich in history and meanings.
Different styles can be distinguished, many danced exclusively by women and some by men, others, usually the most characteristic ones such as folklore, are practiced by both.
